About the colour: Vanda Miss Joaquim
On 15 April 1981 the orchid Vanda Miss Joaquim was selected as Singapore's National Flower. The variety 'Agnes' was chosen in particular for its vibrant colours, hardiness and resilience – qualities that reflect the Singapore spirit. The flower originated from the garden of Agnes Joaquim, an Armenian horticulturist residing in Singapore. She discovered the orchid in 1893 as a natural hybrid between two other orchids.
