Mount Saint Peter (Sint-Pietersberg) at the southern edge of Maastricht is known for its centuries-old underground extraction of chalk rock, usually referred to as 'Limburg marl'. Marl blocks from the quarries were used as building blocks for many of the houses and churches of Maastricht. Mount Saint Peter nowadays is a recreation area for the citizens. It's just one and a half kilometers away from the heart of the city.
